We thought the name might be some kind of gimmick, but let us tell you, it did exactly what it said on the tin! This used to be the main road from Coroico to La Paz, barely a truck width across, gravelly, unlit and constantly eroding. Between 300-400 people die on this road every year - including 5 unwelcome democratic political candidates who had a bit of an "accident".
So, as long as your not running for government, this road is a mountain bikers dream, dropping a massive 3600m over 65km of narrow dirt track with sheer 1000m drops on one side. A reality brought home to us by the fact that our tour guides were selected on their "rope rescue skills"...although they only bring 120m of rope..after that it´s body recovery apparently. All very reassuring when you´re scared out of your wits.
But all that aside, the experience was amazing, starting in freezing fog & snow and gradually descending over 4 hours into sub-tropical rainforest with tons of butterflies, parrots and turkey vultures. It was waaaay too scary to get the camera out but if you want to see just what brave soldiers we were, check out the photos on: http://www.gravitybolivia.com/gallery/PhotohighlightsfromtheWorldsMostDangerousRoad
