Phew! After sleepy New Zealand, Bangkok is something of an assault on the senses. But in a good way. And especially since we ended up staying in Sukhumvit, the centre of Bangkok's sex trade! Neon lights, loud music, street food and beautiful Thai 'ladies' all worked to entice many a sweaty European male with a paunch into a bit of bum-bum (that's Thai for sex in case you're confused!). Popping into what looked like a respectable shop for a foot massage, we witnessed this first hand as a constant stream of shifty looking men emerged from the back room and paid a hell of a lot more that we did for their 'massage'!
We walked, shopped, ate lots of spicy food, rode on tuk-tuks and generally soaked up the atmosphere...and the pollution. The cheapness of everything eventually went to our heads and we decided to treat ourselves to a night of 5 star luxury in the Lebua State Hotel. And what a treat! A huge suite with separate living room and kitchen, free chocolates and cake and..best of all...it was on the 56th floor and had it's own balcony!! What a view. We couldn't have picked a better day as it happened to be the King's birthday, and that night we watched as the streets filled with processions carrying candles and the sky filled with the most amazing fireworks for hours on end. The Sky Bar on the 65th floor houses the world's highest open air restaurant - the view was breathtaking. A definate highlight of our entire trip.
