Abel Tasman National Park, South Island

A long, winding drive with stunning sea views brought us to coastal Marahau, on the Northern-most tip of the South Island, and the gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park. The whole area is totally closed to all traffic so the only access for walking and cycling is by boat. Not wanting to strain oursleves with the whole 5 day trek, we took a water taxi to Tonga Bay and walked the 4-5 hour stretch to Torrent Bay, the most beautiful section of the track passing through dense native forest and across dazzling white sand beaches, pausing for lunch in a deserted bay along the way. It was dreamy! We stayed a few days just to soak up the views and walk in the sun.
